I've had a strange and varied sort of life which I'm happy to reflect upon...now that (I hope) the hardest parts are over. After decades in the business and government sectors, my midlife adventure sent me careening towards the Caribbean aboard Ruff Life., my 33-foot vintage trawler. In beautiful Puerto Rico I became a professional artist, trading my high heels for flip flops, and never looked back.
I remained offshore of the island for a dozen years, more or less in the same spot. Beginning with clerking in a grocery store, I made contacts and friendships which led to opening a kite shop; then becoming a licensed artist; and opening a gallery.
When 9/11 occurred, I was snorkeling. The subsequent period of time was difficult for the world, and particularly hard on an island so dependent on tourism.
But I survived...and thrived...despite not speaking the language even half-way fluetly. But with loads of help from strangers and friends I experienced the most marvelous time which I wouldn't have missed for the world. Please enjoy Reconnecting with Puerto Rico, a wonderful series of then-and-now comparisons of life in sleepy little la Parguera.
My site is full of interesting and unusual snippets of life on a boat in the Caribbean, circa 2000's. Enjoy!
