| I
began working with gourds in 2001, when a friend handed me an higuera
and challenged me to see what I could do with it. I became a certified
artesan in Puerto Rico in 2002, and in 2003 I attended my first gourd
festival,the 4th International
Gourd Art Festival, held at the Welburn Gourd Farm in Fallbrook,
California. An annual gourd art competition, sponsored by the California
Gourd Society, is held in conjunction with the festival. As
a member of the CGS, even though I was unable to attend the show each
year, I sent in my entries to the yearly competition. Click on the
photos to enlarge. |

In 2005 I entered two pieces in the competition...in the Painting
and Mini Masterpiece categories.

2007,
First Place, Painting Category, Advanced Division; 2 Judge's Awards,
CGS
This is my absolute favorite. I'd been wanting to do a Faberge Egg
for years, and when I finally did, everything just clicked! Entirely
made from higueras, the egg has a lattice design, with small paintings
on each side. The inside is painted to look like the sky, surrounding
a birdcage which holds a carved bluebird on a branch. Ken made a
custom hinge for the bottom, so the egg can open and close..

2005,
First Place, Painting Category, Advanced Division, CGS
This one is Ken's favorite. Titled "Her World", the inside
features a variety of sea creatures, and the outside is the full
dolphin. One thing very unnerving about this is it's eyes; I had
it on a turntable, and they seem to follow you. Or I've sniffed
too many acrylics.

2006,
First Place, Painting Category, Advanced Division; Judge's Award,
CGS
I call this one "Keeping An Eye Out". On the inside is
a bird with her eggs; guarding the nest are elves, fairies, and
other woodland creatures.

2004,
First Place, Painting Category, Advanced Division, CGS
Butterflies galore. By the time I was done with this, I didn't want
to think about butterflies,
but I was very pleased with the results. So were the judges.

2007,
First Place, Anything Goes Category, CGS
This lamp was created from gourds which were formed while grown
by a friend of our's who has entirely too much time on his hands.
|
2006,
Honorable Mention in a competition honoring the endangered Cotorra
(parrot)de Puerto Rico, sponsored by Plaza las Americas in San Juan.
Artists competed in a wide variety of mediums. Click on the photo
below for more entries.

2003,
Third Place, Painting Category, Beginner's Division, CGS
This piece sits on top of a Sea Fan.
|
2003,
Second Place, Animal Category, Beginner's Division, CGS
This tiny gourd had collapsed and was wrinkly- looking, so I painted
an octopus on top of a rock. I applied tons of glazes...until I
finally got it right. That usually means until it looks like my
initial color choice!
|
2005,
First Place, Mini Masterpiece, Advanced Division
I love working on tiny things and applying loads of details. This
piece is small enough that I can keep it displayed on the boat.
|
2004,
Honorable Mention, Coffee Festival of Maricao
This coffee cup went to a collector. I've never been able to duplicate
it...as it should be.
